Mississippian Conference Call for Papers

Cahokia Mounds will be holding the annual Mississippian Conference on Saturday July 28, 2012 from 9 am to 4 pm. Researchers are asked to propose papers to be presented, including the name of the presenter, their institutional affiliation, title of the presentation, and a short abstract. Send the above information to “Mississippian Conference” at cahokia.mounds@spcglobal.net. 20-minute time slots for presentations will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.
The focus of the conference will be on Mississippian archaeology and related research in the Midwest and Southeast. A laptop and projector will be provided for PowerPoint presentations.

Children’s Flintknapping Class

Saturday June 16, 2012 from noon until 2 pm, Larry Kinsella will be conducting a flintknapping class for children. This will be an opportunity for children 8 – 14 to learn the basics of making tools and points out of stone. All students should wear long pants. All materials, tools, and safety equipment will be provided. The class is limited, so call to reserve your spot at 618-346-5160. Fee is $15.00 per person.

The annual meeting for IAAA will be held at Cahokia Mounds on March 31, 2012. Meeting registration is $10. Registration will begin at 8, business meeting will begin at 8:30. Research Reports will start at 1:00. Reports scheduled are: John Kelly “Looking West from Monks Mound: From Merrell Tract to St. Louis“; Joe Galloy “Cahokian East St. Louis: Recent Discoveries from the Mississippi River Bridge Project“; Julie Holt “Cahokia as a Theatre State“; Corin Pursell ” Recent Research at the Kincaid Site“; Greg Vogel “Spatial Aspects of Hopewell Mounds in the Illinois Valley“; and Jason King “Middle Woodland Floodplain Mounds in the Lower Illinois Valley“. Winter Lecture Series

March 11 will be the third and final installment of our Winter Lecture Series 2012. At 2 pm, Jonathon Reyman, Ph.D., currently Curator of Anthropology at the Illinois State Museum in Springfield and Editor of the annual newsletter, Teocentli, will give the lecture “Pioneering Archaeology at Chaco Canyon, New Mexico: George H. Pepper, Richard Wetherill, and the Hyde Exploring Expedition (1896-1901).” This presentation provides an overview of the Hyde Exploring Expedition’s work at Chaco Canyon. This is a free event in the auditorium of the Interpretive Center.

Calling Artists for Spring Indian Market

April 13-15, 2012 is Spring Indian Market. We are calling Native American Artists with valid state or federal recognized tribal card to participate. The booth deposit is $50. This event generally brings about 4000 visitors over the weekend, and about 21 artists participate. We are always seeking new and different art forms to offer our shoppers. Portrait of My People, by Erin Kelley

Through personal stories and family photographs, professional actor Erin Kelley, a direct descendant of noted Shawnee leader, Tecumseh, shares her experiences growing up in a Native American/multi-racial family. Portrait of My People offers a personal glimpse into Shawnee and Cherokee history and encourages children (and adults alike) to explore their family heritage and embrace all the parts of their own unique identity. Presented by Avalon Theatre Company, this production received a Kevin Kline Award nomination for Outstanding Production for Young Audiences and enjoyed a successful engagement at the Missouri History Museum in 2010.
Tickets are $5 and admission is free for Museum Society Members.

Indian Market Days

Indian Market Days at Cahokia Mounds will be Friday the 25th from noon – 5, Saturday the 26th from 9 – 5, and Sunday the 27th from 9 – 5. There is no admission charge. This is a unique shopping experience, including 26 Native American artists. Some of the media represented will be; pottery, metal work, jewelry, petroglyph jewelry, painting, drums, dolls, and gourd work. Many tribal affiliations, including Navajo, Miami, Cherokee, Seminole, and Oneida, will be represented. If you are seeking a unique, hand-made holiday gift for someone, come to Cahokia Mounds Thanksgiving weekend.

Site in need of 4X4 SUV Donation

The site’s Jeep 4X4 was recently retired due to a rusted out floorboard and door. Sadly, due to the extreme budget cutbacks, funds are not available to purchase a replacement vehicle (even a used one). If you have a resource that may be able to help the site with a donation of a used vehicle, it would be greatly appreciated. This vehicle is needed to transport staff and supplies to areas of the site, that are at times somewhat remote.
